Phases of Grief

A website called Samada.com was developed a while back, with the goal of providing end-of-life planning resources and support for those who were seeking information.

The editorial staff reached out to me for my comments on a number of topics for their articles. I am sharing one of them with you in this blog. It’s called How Long Does Grief Last.

Grief Stages - Can You Move On?

I want to emphasize the fact that when we are talking about grief, we never ever want to use the term MOVE ON.

You Can Move Forward With Grief

The accepted term to describe what happens when life resumes after the experience of a death of a loved one is MOVE FORWARD. Because that is really what we do.

We do not turn grief off and “move on”.

But rather, in order to survive and continue to live our lives, we have to move in a forward direction.

So, please don’t ask anyone who is grieving, or yourself as a griever, when it’s time to “move on”.

The Best TED Talk on Grief

Perhaps one of the best perspectives about how long grief lasts is the TED TALK performed a couple of years ago by a young woman named Nora McInerny.

After the death of three loved ones within a few months of each other, she became an advocate for showing people who have experienced losses that there is life after loss.

She wrote a book, Hot Young Widows Club, based on a club of the same name, which she created.  She also authored a book, It’s Okay To Laugh (Crying is Cool Too).

This TED TALK is a “must see.”  It’s called We Don’t “Move On” from Grief. We Move Forward With It.
